Glassmaking has been one of the lagoon's best-kept secrets since the dawn of time.

Originally, the glassmakers' furnaces were relocated to a nearby island simply to protect against fire. Until then relatively insignificant, the island soon became one of the most famous centers of glass production and art. Craftsmen were forbidden to reveal the secrets of their art on pain of death. One of these secrets concerned the manufacture of Mille Fiori glass.
